¡VIVA CRISTO REY! ¡VIVA SANTA MARÍA DE GUADALUPE!

Hace cien años empezó la Guerra Cristera.

José ya sabía de qué lado estaba.

CHRIST IS REAL.

José Sánchez del Río was thirteen years old when he asked his parents for permission to join the Cristeros.

His mother tried to talk him out of it.

He told her he had never seen an easier opportunity to gain Heaven and did not want to lose it.

It was 1926.

The government of Plutarco Elías Calles had decided to aggressively enforce the anti-clerical provisions of the Mexican Constitution. The Calles Law severely restricted the clergy and the public life of the Church. Priests were forced to register, foreign clergy were expelled, religious institutions were closed, and the conflict between the government and Mexican Catholics reached a breaking point.

Catholics resisted.

The Cristero War began.

José kept asking until they let him join.

In 1928 he was captured.

They demanded that he deny Christ.

He would not.

They tortured him.

The soles of his feet were flayed and he was forced to walk to the cemetery where he would be killed.

He was fourteen years old.

He kept proclaiming:

LONG LIVE CHRIST THE KING! LONG LIVE OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE!

One hundred years ago, the Cristero War began.

José already knew which side he was on.
